Why John Adams Initiative?
The Barbary Wars marked one of the first defining moments of American strength on the world stage. Faced with attacks on American ships and the kidnapping of U.S. citizens by Barbary pirates in the late 1700s and early 1800s, leaders like John Adams recognized that a free nation must be capable of defending its people and principles. Through the Naval Act of 1794 and the continued expansion of American naval power during his presidency, Adams helped lay the foundation for the United States Navy that would confront these threats abroad. The spirit of resolve, civic duty, and defense of liberty that emerged from that era continues to inspire Americans who believe freedom must be protected through unity, courage, and active citizenship.
